Mean, Median, Mode and the Rest
The mean adds everything up and divides by how many values there are: for 1, 2, 3, 4 that's 10 divided by 4, so 2.5. The median lines the numbers up and takes the middle one, averaging the two middle values when the count is even. The mode is whichever value shows up most often; when nothing repeats, there's no mode to report. Range is the biggest minus the smallest, a quick read on how spread out things are.
When the median tells the truer story
One outlier can drag the mean a long way. Say five houses on a street sell for 200, 210, 220, 230 and 900 thousand: the mean claims 352, yet four of the five sold under 230. The median's 220 describes that street far better. Grades, response times, salaries: any list with a stray extreme value deserves a look at both numbers.
