The Steps Behind the Answer
Adding and subtracting need a common denominator first. Rewrite both fractions over the least common denominator, then combine the tops: 3/4 + 1/6 becomes 9/12 + 2/12, which is 11/12. Multiplying is friendlier, straight across on top and bottom. Dividing is one trick: flip the second fraction and multiply, so 1/2 ÷ 1/4 turns into 1/2 × 4/1 = 2.
Whatever comes out, the calculator divides top and bottom by their greatest common divisor so you land on lowest terms, and anything top-heavy also gets written as a mixed number (7/4 is 1 3/4).
